ECONOMIC WARFARE.

ANGLO-AMERICAN ACTION. (9.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON. July 31. president Roosevelt has set up an Economic Defence Board, headed by the- Vice-President (Mr Wallace) to direct economic defence activities. This move is regarded as a step to tighten up the economic war against the Axis. It is believed that the board will maintain contact with the British Ministry of Economic Warfare. The members include: The Secretary* of State. Mr Hull; the Secretary of the Treasury. Mr Morgenthau ; the Secretary of War, Mr Stimson; the Secretary of the Navy. Colonel Knox ; the Secretary of Agriculture, Mr \Vickard ; the Secretary of Commerce, Mr Jones; and Mr Eraneis Biddlc. The board will advise the President on measures to be taken to co-ordinate the policies and actions of various departments and agencies a.nd develop integrated economic defence plans and ensure the execution of them. The Senate has approved the appointment of Senator T. T. Connally (Democrat, Texas) to be chairman of its Foreign Relations Committee in j succession to Senator W. E. George (Democrat, Georgia), who becomes chairman of the Emaiiee Committee, j President Roosevelt has nominated' Mr Lincoln MaeVcagh, former Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Greece, to be United j States "Minister to Iceland. | Authoritative diplomatic sources in i Buenos Aires said to-day that, owing to legal difficulties, Argentina intends! to withhold support lor the United States black list, thus creating an awkward hole in the economic dam which Washington is striving to erect to prevent the flow of money and materials to the Axis.
