NATIONAL CANDIDATES. ' HUNT CLUB SIDELIGHTS. (By “Spectator.”) Several Grand National Hurdle candidates wore in action at the Manawatu Hunt Club’s meeting and their performances were watched with close interest. The Dozer's exhibition in winning the Waituna Hurdles was outstanding, lie is a line juniper and appeared to have a good deal in hand at the finish. Chat rail a solid race on an interrupted preparation and was handy all the way. She should improve between now and National time. Jewish Lad Scratched. Jewish Lad, who ricked a joint when competing in the steeplechase on the final day of the Auckland June meeting, has been under treatment since, but has not made tho recovery expected, and has been withdrawn from his engagements at the Grand Ntaional meeting. It may be some months before he will be able ,to race again. At the time of the mishap Jewish Lad had a commanding lead, and but for tho trouble seriously affecting him in the last furlong ho would have been an easy winner. Rangitikei Hunt. C. llazloit (vice-president) commented briefly on the subject of wartime racing. Attendances at the club’s meetings during the year, Mr Ilazlett said, had beer, very good and the gate receipts had improved by £llOO. This was the answer to that small section of the community who considered that there should bo no racing during wartime. The public evidently wanted racing and the club was quite right to carry on as usual. The Government had received £22.500 in taxation and it had not cost the Government very much to collect it.
