CHECK OX FLOOD DANGER

Tho farm committee of the Palmerston North Hospital Hoard reported to tho meeting of the board to-day that it had inspected the larm at A»apuui, including the river accretion area. Special attention had been paid ' to tho position which had arisen as the | result of flood damage. The committee had discussed the question of the loss of stock and tho disposition ol the stock on the farm at the time ol tho. flood, and congratulated the larm manager on his personal ctlort, which had resulted in all but lour of the 149 head of stock being saved. The inspection showed that practically the wiiclu of tho fencing on the lower larm had been swept away, tho water having covered this area to a considerable depth and having flowed very fast in places. Considerable erosion had taken place at tuc northern end of the hoard’s property, the hank and part ol the plantation having been washed nway. The committee recommended "at the question of protective work of a considerable nature should be considered, it was also mentioned that it would bo desirable lor tho area to be brought, if possible, under the control of the Palmerston North River Board In such circunislamca it was thought that the Hospital Board could come to some arrangement to pay lot protective works and have these carried out by tho prupc-ri author.lJ. The committee pointed out that the matter was one which cubed lor action this year, as it was felt that the movement of the river was such that it might, il another major flood should take place, very seriously damage the board s property. The chairman (Mr J. -a. Nash) suggested that Mr E. lusher, tho River Board’s advisory engineer, be asked to report on the position and also prepare an estimate tor the Hospital Board which could then approacii tho River Board in the matter. Mr J. Batchciar said the erosion was verv serious and a rise ot 10 feet would flood the property. Ho moved a motion on ihc lines ot M> Nash’s suggestion, and this was carried. it was also decided that representations bo made lor the city engineer tMr J. It. Hughes) to inspect the locality. „ Mr Nash suggested that Messrs D. Collis and J. Boyce, along with the managing-secretary (Mr A. J. 1 hillips), be appointed to control the minor matters in connection with farm workings in order to avoid calling the whole committee together. This was adopted.
