OBITUARY.

DIRS C. Dl. WITHERS

The death of Dlrs Caroline Dlargarct AATthcrs occurred recently in Palmerston North at ttic advanced age of t)b years. Sho was a resident of Shannon for a long time until seven years ago, tvfien slio went to reside at Levin with her daughter, Mrs S. A. Pedersen. Tno late Mrs Withers was horn at Doncaster, England, in 1840, and, loilowtng a brief stay in Australia as a small child with her parents, Rev. Isaac and Dlrs Harding; she. came to New Zealand. Alter a period of seven years she returned to England to complete her education and subsequently came back to the Dominion. In 1863 site married Mr William Withers in Napier. Mr Withers, who was the eldest son of Major withers of the Goth Regiment, predeceased her some 3G years ago. A Jitelong and ardent supporter ot the temperance movement, Mrs Withers was well known tor her interest in any cause which promoted tho betterment of others. Slio is survived b.v one son, Mr Arthur AYithers (Shannon), and five daughters, Dlrs Dl. Webber (Palmerston North), Mrs A. AV. Elliott (Waipukurau), Dlrs D. Jenkins (formerly of Shannon, but recently removed to AVcllington), Dlrs S. A. Bedcrscn (Levin) and Miss Dl. Withers (Palmerston North).

DIRS A. Dl. N. ANDERSON

Still another of New Zealand's small group of pioneers who laced the hardships of its early years has passed away, following a short illness, in the person of Mrs Adelaide Alary Neilie' Anderson, widow ot the late Dir John Anderson, of Palmerston North. Dir Anderson, who for many years was well-known in this district as the manager of the Longburn freezing works, predeceased his wife some 1G years ago. Born in Edinburgh, close to Holyrood Palace, 78 years ago. Dlrs Anderson, who before her marriage was Dliss Dryburgh, came to New Zealand at the age of 14 in a sailing vessel and went to reside with her sister at Roxburgh (Otago). She later shifted to AVoodville, but left there for AA'aitoitoi, Temuka, where she was married to Dir Anderson.

Mrs Anderson, who had resided in this district for the past 45 years, was of a retiring disposition, but nevertheless was loved by all who knew her. During the latter part of her life she lived with her daughter, Airs E. F. Petersen, of Lyndhurst Street. There aro left to mourn her passing one daughter and five sons—Airs E. P. Petersen (Palmerston North) and Messrs J. D. Anderson (Dannevirke), F. AY. Anderson (Wellington), J., G., and C. Anderson (Palmerston North). There are seven grandchildren. Airs Anderson is also survived by two brothers, Air George Dryburgh (Edinburgh) and Afr Frank Dryburgh (Sandwich, Illinois).

At tlie funeral tho pall-bearers were the five sons and a son-in-law, Air E. P. Petersen.
