Lieut.-Commander P. G. Connolly, R.N.V.11. (N.Z.), a member of the Dunedin City Council, who has been serving on a minesweeper in British waters, will return to New Zealand in December to take up a new appointment.

The death occurred recently of Mr Alexius Elek Rott. structural engineer and architect of the Department of Housing. He was a graduate of the Prague University, and was one of the prominent structural engineers and architects of that country. He came to the Dominion two years ago.

Feeling reference to the work of the late Air H. W. (Tom) Spring as a deacon of Emmanuel Congregational Church was made hv Rev. W. Al. Garner at a memorial service conducted in the church yesterday morning. The text chosen by Mr Garner for the service was: “It is better to be a door-keeper of the House of the Lord than to dwell in the tents of the wicked.” The Drencher paid a high tribute to the life' of the late gentleman. At the annual meeting, on Saturday night, of the Palmerston North branch of the New Zealand Printing and Related Trades Union, a motion of sympathy with the widow and son of the lute Air Spring was passed. The death occurred yesterday at his homo at Wellington of Sir George tShiiLclifle, K.8.E., a leader in the commercial life of the Dominion, in his 80th year. He was born at Worksop, England, in 1862, and came to New Zealand as a child, subsequently being associated with various business undertakings.
