NEWBURY INSTITUTE.

The monthly mooting’ of the Newbury ! Women’s Institute was hold on July 16, when Mrs Will, of Rongr/cn, gave an entertaining talk on her travels abroad with a touring group. She recounted some of her experiences which included •an afternoon spent with Lord and Lady Bledisloo. Other visitors were Miss Birehley and Mrs Sandcreoek, also from Rongotea. The I hostesses were Mesdamos Maeuulcy and } Rain. The large number of entries for the competitions showed the interest taken in them; this is most encouraging to the committee. Mrs Will acted as judge and awarded the prizes as follow: Flower, Mrs | . Shaw 1, Mrs Gore 2, Mrs Ilanscn 3; bootees, Mrs Healey 1. Mrs Gore 2. Mrs Clapcott 3. The competition for next month is to Ire for a baby’s singlet (knitted). The next meeting is to he hold at the residence of Mrs A. K. Simpson, Rangitikei Line, where the hostesses-will bo Mrs A. K. Simpson and Miss Lynch.

1 PLUNKET SOCIETY. Mrs G. C. Petersen presided at a 1 meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Plunket Society yesterday and extended a welcome to Adjutant Tyler, of the Salvation Army. Mrs AY. G. Black thanked members lor a letter of sympathy with Mr Black in his recent illness, and Mrs Kirk expressed her gratitude for flowers she received during her recent illness. Headquarters advised that the annual conference woidd ho held in AVellington in October and that four I delegates could bo appointed by the branch. It was decided to write to the Eoxton branch inviting it to send a delegate to tho conference. The local branch’s representatives are to be appointed later. Correspondence received from headquarters previously, asking | that tho branch provide facilities for the training of voluntary Plunket aids, was discussed and it was decided to proceed with the project on lines set out by the Dominion council as soon as possible. The report of the Plunket nurse (Miss A. M. Kearns) stated that 1844 visits had been paid to the office (adults 927, babies 833, and older children 84), 158 visits having l>een paid to homes, while 41 new ! cases were reported. Parcels of clothing were acknowledged from Mesdames Bendall, Macplierson and anonymous | donors. Dr. Nannestead had examined 24 older children. Four visits had boon paid to Eoxton, whore visits to the office totalled 189 (adults 91, babies 84, older children 14). There were five new eases. Sales for tho month amounted to £7 os 2d, membership fees £4 6s; and donations were received from Mrs AA 7 . A. Geary (£1). Airs G. T. Smith (10s 6d), Mrs AA 7 . K. Hall, and anonymous (10s each); and the collection box yielded £3 19s, making a total of £IS Os Sd.
