FOXTON STREET NAMES

The committee set up at last month's meeting of the Foxton Borough Council to consider the question of renaming somo of the streets in the borough reported back to a meeting of the council this week. It recommended the altering of names as follow: Park Street, to Park Avenue; Kaston Street to Kaston Avenue; Hulke Street to Freyborg Avenue; Clyde Street to Truby King Street. The special committee consisted of the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perrcau) and Crs. D. R. Barron. L. Fletcher, and R. Cochrane. The Mayor stated that it was not desired to upset anyone regarding changing of names, -but it was felt that somo of them could be brought more up-to-date. Where it was proposed to change "street" to "avenue," it was also proposed to carry out a tree-planting scheme in keeping with the idea. Tho cleric (Mr W. Trueman) 'said that ho had received two letters 05 the proposal, one anonymous and the other from Mr F. Rockstrow, of Wellington, who gore seme interesting information on the naming of Hulke Street, after tho late Mr Hulke, "one of the Dominion's foremost schoolmasters." and a man who had done much to educate the earlier settlers of Foxton. Cr. Brooks opporsd changing the name of Hulke Street to start with. "As a schoolmaster, tho first in Foxton, I believe ho did much to guide the people of the community, and we should respect his memory." he said. Cr. RoTiinson agreed. Cr. Podmoro moved that no action be taken regarding the altering of names. The motion was finally carried, Crs. Barron and Fletcher being the only ones to vote against it. ___^_____^_
