ECONOMIC REPORT.

FARMERS URGE ACTION. (Press Assn.) WELLINGTON, July 17 The Government was urged to implement the recommendations of the lOconomic Stabilisation Conference in a remit adopted at the annual conference of the Fanners' Union to-day. The union adv'oeated the provision of long-term table finance from the State Advances Corporation for advances to farmers on land and stock security at such tartrate of interest as would make possible long-term farming methods. A remit from Auckland advocating the provision of this finance from the Reserve Bank was defeated on a show of hands.

j The Government was urged to recI tify the disproportionate amount spent on the war effort in- comparison with the heavy expenditure on purely domestic programmes. By 29 votes to 15, the conference resolved to favour the extension of the principle of family allowances. The opinion that the present system of levying rates on land for hospital purposes should be abolished and that the' total cost of hospitals, both capital and maintenance, should be a charge on the Social Security Fund, was expressed when a remit to that effect from South and North Taranaki, Nelson and Southland was carried. It was stated that the Minister of Health bad admitted that the incidence of hospital rating was unsatisfactory. One speaker expressed concern that if the union's proposal were given effect to the Government might take over the control of the hospitals altogether.
