BRITAIN CAN GIVE IT.

SPLENDID OPPORTUNITY.

With an income-tax at a basic rate jof 10s in the pound besides a higher I cost of living, one could quite reasonably expect the people of Britain to (have slacked off in their response to charitable appeals. Instead, they have l responded more generously than ever before, to judge from the' response to the 8.8.C.'s appeals. For instance, Uncle Mae of the children's hour recently appealed for X'JdOO for a mobile X-ray unit. He got more than ten times that sum, the children of Britain, and their parents, thereby contributing to the cost of seven units instead of one, plus everything needed for their maintenance.

Since the start of the war, the Week's Good Cause, the 8.8.C.'s Sunday night appeal, has raised altogether j over £650,000 directly in spite of the j fact that reception of the appeal has ; frequently been interfered with ; enemy air raids at the time. 111, 1940 ' —when income-tax, it is true, had not reached its present record ligure of ten shillings in the pound, but was only 8s (id —the total sum raised for the various causes was between two and three times greater than that of the best peace year. The largest single appeal was made on bohr I of seamen and their dependants. [t raised over £IOO,OOO at once, a figure which has since grown to over JL'iIOO.OOO. Very lew single appeals have raised less than £IOOO.
