APPEALS HEARD

TERRITORIAL TRAINING. JhoXo. 6A Man-Power ( jmmitlcc heard appeals at Fcilding to-day. Mr G. A. -Monk presided and associated •with him were A'Jesers C. R. Murpfi'y and J. C Young. Mr 11. J. Worthington represented tlie Crown. All the appeals were based on the grounds of public interest or undue hardship, and decisions were as follow:— Thomau Whitfield Pratt, tanner: Adjourned sine die. Arthur James Pullcn. farmhand, appealed for bv Flying-Officer K. W. Barnott (Mr C. E. Taylor), who asked for an adjournment until the next sitting of the committee: Mr Taylor said Flying-Officer Barnett was serving as an instructor in the Air .Force and his farm totalled 460 acres carrying 1030 ewes; adjourned as requested. David Henry Rutherford, farmer, appeal by Percy C. Rutherford: Mr Taylor said tho ballotcc was eligible for Territorial training. Appellant said ho carried 1300 sheep on his Bcaeonsfiold property and 500 breeding ewes at Bunnythorpc; lambing operations made it inconvenient for his son to go into camp at present; tho first three months in tho new year would be the bt*t. Without his son at the present time witness said ho could not carry on as the lambing season extended over a period of four months; the ballotcc had been rejected for overseas servico and was 34 years nf age. Decision reserved. Mr 'faylor asked if more notice could be given of sittings of the committee; he stated that his client had received a telegram on Monday last intimating that his appeal would be heard to-day. Mr Monk said the matter would be looked into.

Bert Hopping, farm labourer, appealed for by Wilson Hopping: Tho ballotcc, it was stated, was graded IA. Mr John Graham, who appeared for appellant, asked that, the ballot'eo be allowed to enter camp immediately to facilitate his farming operations later." Appeal dismissed, trainee to go into camp next month. Sidney Albert Edwin Burgess, farmhand, appealed for by Frederick C. Burgers: Mr Graham pointed out that trainee could not lift one. arm higher than his shoulder and a medical certificate to this effect was submitted. Mr Graham said it was a waste of time dealing with such a ease in view of the circumstances. The Committee agreed to adjourn tho hearing until next "sitting, meanwhile the medical certificate would be forwarded to the military authorities by Mr Worthington to form the basis for re-examination uy the medical board.

I'hilip Richmond Whisker, farmer, of liidls: Appellant staled that he was living with his widowed mother on a properly carrying 30 cows and 226 breeding ewes; all the farm work was done by him; he could not get assistance. He had no pergonal objections tn doing his training. He was one of the first in the Bulls district to join the Home Guard. Decision reserved.

James Norman Barlow, assistant projectionist, appeal by William John Barlow (father), who asked if reservist could enter a camp near Feilding so that he could have leave, to assist bis father. Mr Worthington said he had inquired of the Army authorities and found that such leave would interfere with tho training. Tho Committee had no control after a trainee entered camp. The Army authorities had intimated that contact would bo mado with Mr Worthington should there bo a vacancy in the Palmerston North or Wanganui camps. To Mr Monk, appellant, said his son would bo required to assist him at Rangiwahia and Apiti two nights a week. Appellant said tho Dominion was very short of cinematograph operators and Mr Monk replied chat wo might have -to go .without pictures in tiie near future. / ~ pellant said ho had three sons who had completed training, two having served overseas. Ho was an old military man and did not wish any of his sons to fail to meet their military obligations, but training at the present time would upset appellant's business. Reservist is a Home Guardsman. Decision wa3 reserved.

Roy Vivian Burgess, dairy farmer, Bulls; reservist said that a statement concerning bis farming operations had been submitted. Tlicro was no one to take appellant's place; he had been unable to get relief. Appellant was not a Home Guardsman but had no objection to joining the organisation. Mr D. C Cullinane, who appeared for appellant, submitted that tho latter was a producer and could best serve his country in that _ capacity. He was almost over age for military service. Adjourned sine die, reservist to join tho Home Guard. Edward Donald Astwood, farmer, appealed for by Edward Astwood. Adjourned till next sitting of the committee in Palmorston North. Edward John Kendall, Fcilding: Dismissed, reservist not to be called up before the end of November to enable him to complete his studies. William David Horn, farm labourer. Ifalcombe. appeal by John F. Horn, 'mere was no appearance made by appellant and the appeal was struck out. Peter Ward Gunn, farm labourer, appealed for by Herbert J. E. Gunn. Appellant said he had two sons in the Armed Forces and reservist was needed to assist with farming work; reservist a member of the Homo Guard. Dismissed, reservist not to bo called up before the end of the year. Howard D. Brewster, farmer, Foildmg. Dismissed on condition that reservist be called up for intensive training during OetoDcr November and December. Edmund Frank Cousins, sheepfarmer, appeal by tho Estate of F. -B. Cousins. Adjourned sine die.
