COUNCIL OF WOMEN.

VISIT BY PRESIDENT.

An opportunity to meet Mrs D. Mcintosh (Hamilton), Dominion president of the National Council of Women, who was passing through Palmerston North yesterday on her way to Wellington, was afforded at the July meeting of the Manuwatu branch. Mrs J. Harris (Turakina) presided and conveyed a welcome to Mrs Mcintosh.

The secretary (Miss C. Jamieson) reported a request from tho Diuiedin branch that delegates to the conference should be fully cognisant of matters set out in a pamphlet, "Statement of Facts," issued by the W.C.T.U.. This is to be given sympathetic consideration.

Support was solicited from tho Wanganui branch for a remit asking that it he made illegal to raise money for patriotic purposes by raffles, etc. Tho chairman voiced her support of the remit

With regard to tho W.C.T.U. petition asking support in the effort to have tho law enforced regarding drinking after hours, the Dominion president warned that it was not sufficient to record votes in a meeting but also to follow it up with action.

It was resolved to write to the town clerk expressing appreciation of the decision of the City Council to open meetings with prayer. Mrs Mcintosh referred in complimentary terms to the work carried out by the branch and particularly the help given by the secretary, Mrs Jamieson, whose letteres always conveyed sonic constructive thought. She referred to the .generous gesture of the branch in circulating copies of. Miss Janiicson's excellent precis on "Planning for Peace." Mrs Mc-. Intosh spoke of the importance of gathering in the young people, if not as delegates at least as associate members. It was vital to every organisation to have the vision of the young with the experience of the old. "We do not exist to do things," she said, ."but to inspire all the other organisations to work together, then the National Council has the right to go with them." Delegates niust r put it to their organisations to exercise care in their [instruction, which must do more than I sound well. If they were supporting a j good move they should help it aloug. She reminded the meeting there were 10U different societies affiliated in tho council, and some !100 in the branches. If branches brought to the Dominion Council all the big things which'-, in turn passed through all the affiliated societies, that in itself was a big work to be doing. The council did not i exist for conference remits, hut to I co-o.diiiate the work of the various' I organisations and that was her own [ vision of what it should mean.. It was ' not good to have too much leadership as they knew from European happenings, but rather the ideal was for the leader to keep the strings in her hand i to adjust as need be.
