NEW WOOL PROCESS

OFFERED TO DOMINION. PROFITS FOR RESEARCH (Special.) WELLINGTON, Alay 16. A new process which avoids shrinkage and ielting ol wool in its manufacture was recently' announced in England, and is to he made available m New Zealand. According to the original official statement wnicli was cabled, it is to be utilised during the war lor military clothing, and will not be available lor civilian use till fcbe war ends. Further details of the discovery were given to the “Alanawatu iStandard's ’ correspondent by Air M. Christie (chairman of the New Zealand Wool Council). It is known, iic said, as the woolindris process, and is a great advance on previous methods of avoiding ielting and shrinkage in wool. The Torridon AVool Research Station and other scientific authorities arc satisfied from many tests that it is effective. ‘‘The Dominions,” continued Air Christie, “have been offered the use of the process,. the only condition imposed being that the royalty payable is to be expended in the furtherance of the interests ol the wool industry, probably by way of further research.” From actual samples of woollen singlets made under this method, it seems clear that results are effective, the shrinkage being negligible. Apparently the process can he applied at any stage of working up the wool, and it is likely to result in greater utilisation, of tlie finer wools. This will be good, news to New Zealand producers of this type of wool. The cost of the process, added Air Christie, is not heavy, though it eliminates almost completely the former complaints of shrinkage and felting in the manufacture of the finer wool garments.
