EXTRACTS FROM "STANDARD." MAY 16, 1911 A Sydney cablegram stated that the Brisbane Tho.'t-and, >e\en furlongs. had been won by Destruction 9 8 with My Gavonnc 9.0 second. and Precious. 9.5 third. A New York message stated that peace negotiations between the Government and the rebels in Mexico had heen resumed on the basis of the reorganisation of Cabinet. The Government was to surrender 14 of the 28 governorships to the nominees of the rebels. President Diaz had heen given 24 hours to consider the matter. Fighting had occurred in Johannesburg in the tramwayincn's strike. The police had used batons and revolvers to restore order. Attempts were being made to blowup the rails. The Manawatu A. ami P. Association had decided to spend tlßoo on a c-heep pavilion at the Showgrounds in memory of the late Mr George Wheeler.
