OBITUARY.

MR ,J. T. BURRELL. The death occurred oa Wednesday, in a private hospital, of Mr John Thomas BurreLl, aged 87 years, of 49 Bourke (Street. In July of last year Mr and Mrs Burrell celebrated the both anniversary of their wedding, and Mrs Burrell predeceased her husband by a few months. ' Shortly after his marriage, at Newton Leys, Sudbury, SuffolK, Mr Burrell left for New Zealand, Mrs Burrell accompanying him. They went to Arrowtown,, Mr Burrell being attracted by • the gold-mining, but, finding conditions not in line with his expectations, he abandoned this calling and undertook that of book-keeper and draper, at Arrowtown. Mr Burrell took an active part in the activities of the Methodist Church, and acted as organist, a position which he also filled tor the Anglican Church. At the age of 29 he was elected Mayor of Arrowtown, after being a member of the Borough Council, and after his removal to Tapanui he was elected Mayor there also. Early in the present century an attack of typhoid fever caused Mr Burrell's health to break down and he undertook a trip to England. He settled in Palmerston North on his return and remained here for 35 years. He was engaged in business as a draper in Rangitikei Street, and retired from active business life 18 years ago. Mr Burrell was a member of the British and Foreign Bible Society, a Royal Arch Freemason and was formerly Master of the Oddfellows' Lodge at Tapanui. He was connected for a long period with the Cuba Street Methodist Church, of which he was a local preacher. His only son was killed on the Somme in the last war.
