COLYTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) COLYTON, Oct. 7.

The social and danco sponsored by the Colyton Patriotic Society was responsible for a large gathering in the hall. The success of the evening was the reward of much hard work by the energetic committee. Visiting artists provided the entertainment for the first portion of the evening. the stage, artistically arranged with flowers and foliage, providing a pretty and realistic garden scene for the items. An elocutionary number was given by Peter Shortall. A play by players from the Community Centro, entitled “Men Are Missing’’ and produced by Mrs H. C. D. Somerset, was much appreciated, as was a second play “Husbands Supplied,” produced by Mrs Younger. The characters were all skilfully interpreted. Songs were sung by Miss Matheson, of Rongotea, for which she won much applause, ns did Miss Elaine Short’s, elocutionary numbers. A popular and youthful performer was Miss Pauline Hastio, Feilding, who delighted with songs; ’cello solos by Mrs Rowe (Rongotea) were appreciated, as were songs by Mr Rowe, following which Miss Mathieson contributed a pianoforte solo, the concluding item being a musical monologue by Mrs Rowe. Following supper tho floor was cleared for dancing. A. Funston, on behalf of the society, conveyed thanks to the performers for the excellent programme they had provided, and to the audience for the very generous support accorded the appeal. Novelty numbers added to the enjoyment. Music for the danco was provided by Mr G. Dick. Miss A. Short donated to the society a cake which she won in a competition.
