TENSION AT WEI-HAI-WEI.
JAPANESE OCCUPY ISLAND. PROVOCATIVE ACTS. (Rec. 9.55 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 8. Reuter’s .Shanghai correspondent re; ports that at the port of Wei-hai-wei the situation is extremely tense. On October 1, from which date a new British lease was granted by the Chungking Government 60 Chinese sailors, accompanied by a force ol armed Japanese marines brought from Tsingtao in the Japanese cruiser Iwate, were landed on an island in order to “take over the administration” there. Simultaneously boards were established in prominent positions throughout the island stating in Japanese and English that: “British interests having terminated on September 30, 1940. the Japanese navy will hereafter take over and administer the island lor military necessity.” It is understood the Japanese have requested the evacuation ot all property occupied by the British naval authoriIt is learnod that tlie Hong Kong police at the week-end and yesterday raided several Japanese establishments, including the Bank of Taiwan, the Japanese newspaper Hong Kong iNippo, and the home of the Asalu Shimbun correspondent.
