PERSONAL.
A call from the congregation of StJohn’s Presbyterian Church, Wellington, to Rev. P. Gladstone Hughes, of Auckland, has been accepted by Mr Hughes. Colonel J. H. Whyte, who is now engaged in organising mounted Territorial units throughout New Zealand, passed through Palmerston North this week on 'his way to Wellington, having been in the Auckland area for some time.
After being away for three years, Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher, former minister of the Bereslord Street Congregational Church, has returned to Auckland. He has been engaged on youth work in England and Ireland under the National Free Church Council, also taking part in winter campaigns in South Africa For eight months he was in charge of a large Congregational Church at St. Leon-ards-on-Sea, near Hastings, in England.
Sergeant J. M. Mcßae, officer in charge of the Taihape police station, is retiring shortly after nearly 39 years’ service. He first joined the force at Wanganui in 1902, and after serving in the river city ior a short period lie was transferred to New Plymouth, which was included in the Wanganui police district. Sergeant Mcßae’s next shift was to Palmerston North, where he carried out the duties of a mounted constablo for many years before moving to Hastings, where ho was engaged in similar work. Prom there he went to Eeilding, and then to Ractihi, where he was in charge for eight years. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant, and transferred to Christchurch, where lie remained for a year or two before going south to Dunedin, and thence to Port Chalmers. He was in charge of the latter station for about 13 years, and had four constables under him. Five years ago last March lie went to Taihape.
