PATRIOTIC SOCIETY. There was a large attendance at a. meeting of the Woods’ille District Patliotic Society, last evening, the Mayor (Mr R. R. Johnston) presiding. Those present included representatives from Papatawa, Ngawapurua and llojielands-K-umeroa. The chairman reported that the whole of the district’s parcels quota had been despatched and had been paid for without recourse to the provincial fund. The whole of the work had been done by various branches of the Women's Institute and the W.D.F.U., and the ladies were ’ to be congratulated on having made an excellent job of it. In connection with recommendations put forward at the previous meeting for the zone conference, the chairman reported the unanimous adoption of the request for any surplus over the province’s quota for the Spitfire Fund to be paid into the provincial fund. The request for a clear definition .by the Government, through the National Council, of the rehabilitation policy was also endorsed, but it appeared that such a statement would not be forthcoming for some time. The recommendation that parcels be sent to soldiers abroad every two months was alsu unanimously adopted at Napier, and final approval by the board was hoped for. The society’s remit aiming at securing better facilities fur sending money to soldiers aboard was also supported, and had since been discussion in Parliament. Reversion to the former simpler method of conducting £5 raffles had been approved. Mr H. P. Horne reflected the feeling of the meeting in congratulating the chairman and Mr Cattanacli on the outstanding success in the presentation of tnc Woodville recommendations at the provincial conference. The secretary (Mr D. Keay) presented the following statistics showing fhe result of past and current efforts since the beginning of the war : —Fighting Service* Appeal. £317 8s 8d; Red Cross Appeal, £1212 16s Id; Spitfire Fund, £66; London Fund (proceeding)/ £49 11s; Provincial Fund, £IBB 15s; total, £1834 10s 9d, The appointment of Mr T. Smith and Messrs K. Strand, S. J. Worboys and Pilcher to the committee was confirmed. The chairman reported that sanction for the open ing of an imprest account up to £SO had been received,

When ways and means of raising Woodville’s quota of the £1,000,000 Fund came up lor consideration, the chairman announced that the dietrict quota had been raised from £1350 to £2OOO. He conveyed to the meeting the information given out by the honorary organiser (Major Abel) and staled that the fund, which closes on November 30, was intended to cover all special needs of all branches of tho Forces on active service and in camps, and to have ample funds on hand as these, domands arose. Moreover, it was apparent that increased contributions would bo re quired (or relieving distress in the United Kingdom. As to ways and means, he favoured tho suggestion of a queen carnival, and further suggested that they co-oper-ate with Lanncvirkci on the lines suggested in an offer received from Danncvirke. Alter several suggestions had been discussed, it was decided, on the motion of Mows Leach and Goodman, to hold a queen carnival, and, iußheiy on tho motion of Nils l’rydo and Mr Leach, . that, there be three candidates, represent alive of citizens, kindred sports and farmers. It having been stated that certain valuable collecting niece had been detached from the Woodville County for jiatrioiic funds purpose*, it was decided, on tho motion of Mr Horne and Mrs McNeil, that the llannevirke carnival committee be asked to credit Woodville with collections from the areas mentioned. The chairman was authorised to attend a meeting at Lonnevirke' at which a proposal to widon the scope at the various carnivals in Southern Hawke’s Bay will be discussed. It was stated that <nir idea envisages a final contest between the several district winners. The chairman mentioned an offer of assistance by a Pahiatua conceit party, and a concert in preparation by Miss Stephenson.
