SCHOOL COMMITTEES

MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL. ’ The Manchester Street School Committee met last evening, Mr Z. McLeod presiding. Also present were Mesdames P. G. Guy and S. McDowall (secretary), Messrs J. Campbell, T. Trioklebank, P. Maeguard, L. Matthews, L. Carmine, and the headmaster (Mr F. J. Gaze). Mr Gaze reported that the attendance during September was quite good and the present roll stood at 368. Threo British children had been enrolled. The supervisor of the special olassos (Miss Valentine) 'had paid a visit to the school. The children of the school entered into the campaign to salvage waste metals heartily, and a considerable quantity had been received. Mrs McDowall reported having attended a meeting of the Dental Clinic Committee and stated that 153 children had received treatment, whereas 290 were eligible. It was resolved to clieck the list with a view to 'having service for all the children provided for. Mr Gaze said that some of the parents preferred to make their own ■ arrangements. It was further decided that parents he sent accounts for the treatriient of their children’s teeth early in the new year. It was stated that some parents neglected to pay the fee until half-way through the year, and waited until a child had toothache before taking the necessary steps.

LYTTON STREET SCHOOL.

At a meeting of the Lyttoii Street School Committee, last evening, those present were Mr C. V. Jewell (chairman) Mrs T. Donovan, Messrs C. V. Guv, L. Jenkins, J. C. Christian, N. Bramweli and tlie headmaster (Mr W. H. Smith). It was reported that Mrs E. L. lleay, appointed as an additional assistant lor the remaining months of the year, had taken up her duties. Miss Stewart, who succeeded Mr Prince on the stafi, had since joined the High School staff. The cliaiijnan said tVt a permanent appointment was desirable, as a succession of relieving teachers was not in the interests of the pupils. Miss E. J. Bartlett has been appointed to succeed Miss Stewart. It was resolved that the Wanganui Education Board be requested to make a permanent appointment to fill the vacancy caused by the transfer of Mr Prince. The headmaster’s report stated that the roll stood at 390 and tho attendance had been good. A substantial quantity of nonferrous metals had been collected by the children. Knitting of garments suitable for soldiers had been done by girls. Comment on the waste metal drive was made by Mr Smith, who said' the children had done splendidly. His romarks were endorsed by the chairman and memliers.
