BEAU VITE BRILLIANT.

METROPOLITAN VICTORY. STAYER OF GREAT CLASS. SYDNEY, Oct. 7. Beau Vite’s dazzling victory in tlie Metropolitan at the Australian Jockey Ciub’s meeting at llandwick to-day stamps him as a stayer whose class is hard to find in Australia at present. He appears, according to experienced followers of the turf, to havo a mortgage on the Melbourne Cup. Not since the days of Phar Lap has any horse achieved a double track record at a Randwick meeting as was registered by Beau Vito in the Colin Stephen Stakes and the Metropolitan Handicap. His time of 2.42 for the mile a.nd five furlongs today constituted an Australian and New Zealand record. It was hitborto held by Young Crusader, whoso 2.421 was established in 1937.

Beau Vito has made all the improvement anticipated of him as a tour-year-old, and ia expected to provide a real threat to Ajax in the, Victorian weiglit-lor-age races. Ilis triumph in the Metropolitan wac not relished by tho “fielders,” who had him heavily coupled with High Caste and also Beaulivre in the Epsom. .Beaulivre looked fit to-day, but weakened at the three-furlong post and boat only two home in the Metropolitan. The consistent New Zealand-bred colt Pinero gained further honours by easily winning the Grantham Stakes. Results:

THE SHORTS, of £6OO. Six furlongs.— Gold Salute 8.10 (Bartle) 1, Caesar 8.2 2 Flying Night 8.4 3. Gold Salute justified tho high opinion hitherto held of him and won like a champion in the record timo of 1.10.

BREEDERS’ PLATE, of £I3OO. Colls and geldings only. Five furlongs.—Yaratla 8.5 (McMenamin) 1, King Herod 8.5 2, Dick Whittington 8.5 3. Three lengths. Time, 60sec.

THE METROPOLITAN, of £SOOO. One mile and three furlongs. BEAU VITE 9.4 (McMenamin) 1 READING 9.0 (Munro) 2 PANTLER 7.10 (Cook) 3

After a good start Reading soon took command from Beau Vito, Beaulivre, Old Rowley, Dashing Cavalier, Bilinia Ilcro, Mosaic and St. Constant. Reading headed the field to the home turn, where Beau Vite dashed past and led along the straight. He finished full of running to win in the most brilliant manner by two lengths in tho Australian and New Zealand record time of 2.42. CENTENNIAL PARK HANDICAP, of £SOO. For thrce-year-old fillies. Ono mile. —Happy Lass 7.0 (Bartle) 1, Celebration 8.3 2, Celebrity 8.9, 3. A length and a-half. Time, 1.375.

GRANTHAM STAKES, of £SOO. For three and four-year-olds. Ono mile and one furlohg.—Pinero 7.9 (Thompson) 1, Ill's Lordship 6.12 2, C'hatoona 7.12 3. A length and a-half Time, 1.51&. SQUATTERS’ HANDICAP, of £SOO. One mile and a-quarter.—Seven Fifty 8.4 (Munro) 1. Sedunum 9.7 2, Gilltown 8.4 3. Half a length each way. Time, 2.2 J. As a result of public rumours and conjecture at the week-end regarding the Bcaulivro incident in the Epsom Handicap, the A.J.C. stewards to-day made further inquiries and questioned the horse’s owner, Mr E. C. Harnett, who assured the stewards that ho was a heavy loser, and produced betting tickets and vouchers revealing that he had backed Beaulivre to win many thousands straightout and in doubles. . . The stewards also heard evidence from the New Zealand jockey, A. E. Ellis, as to Beaulivre’s running in the Metropolitan to-dav and reported that Ellis declared that Beaulivre oould not have won even had the race been a mile. He finished distressed. HIGH CASTE'S GAMENESS. '

Reviewing the contest for the Epsom Handicap at Randwick, on Saturday the Sydney Sunday Sun (received by air mail), says: “Trainer J. T. Jamieson did not decide to start High Caste in the Epsom until 10, minutes before the A.J.C. Derby was run —2.48 p.m. Less than an hourlater High Caste had proved himself one of the greatest horses to have raced in Australia, having overcome a serious foot injury and won a prize of £2250.”
