At Dannevirke on Saturday afternoon, Major J. Abe'., honorary.. organiser of the £1,000,000 Appeal, met representatives ot zone committees of Southern Hawke s Bay in order to explain the purpose of the appeal and to give the necessary advice and suggestions for activities connected with it Mr J. S. Williams presided, and welcomed Major Abel, whose comprehensive address, on the lines of that given at Palmerston North earlier in the day. was listened to with keen interest by the delegates. Touching on a doubt, regarding the London Appeal, Major Abel stated that those still desiring to give money for relief in the United Kingdom could speedy their donation for that purpose, and they oould bo sure of it being earmarked and forwarded to that destination. Mr R. R. Johnston (Woodville) stated that the public were asking whether any of this fund was for rehabilitation, as it had been stated at the Napier conference that the next big appeal would be for rehabilitation, on which matter the public were awaiting some definite information. He suggested that if something bearing upon rehabilitation appeared in the literature given out it would make a big difference to tho public. _ Mr Johnston emphasised, however, that Woodville would give its full co-operation to the effort. Another delegate said it was understood that the National , Patriotic Council would not embark on such an appeal until it had a statement from the Government. -Major Abel replied that it v-as a most difficult subject, and he exhibited a volume of newspaper cuttings as evidence of his endeavours to define the position. As a matter of fact, he said, many men were already receiving assistance in that category, but it was hard to say just when j the Government would commence to plan. | If matters were held up pending the Gov- | ernment’s action, there would be indefinite delay. As an instance of uncertainty regarding the full scope of action under rehabilitation, Major Abel read extracts of R.S.A. proceedings in an endeavour to define its limits. He referred to the pub lished objects of the present fund as being to supply immediate comforts and assistance to the men of all branches of ser-! vices at home and abroad. In reply to j further questions Major Abel stated that in certain cases of men discharged they had received assistance from the Sick and I Wounded Fund, ajid several weeks* social security benefit. Tic did not think there was any intention to substitute public subscription fer State obligation. Ihe matter of sending four parcels a year to men overseas had been the subjeeto f a resolution by the beard. Major Abel was accorded thanks for his informative address and answers. PATRIOTIC FUNDS.
