THE LIBRARY
FREE SERVICE INAUGURATED, Following a period during which the public library was closed in order to euablo the librarian (Mr 11. AV. H. AVood) to arrange the shelves to accommodate the 550 new books received from the Country Free Library Service, the doors were opened yesterday and throughout the day Air AVood was inundated with inquiries. No fewer than 130 new subscribers were registered under the scheme, and it is anticipated that the popularity of the library will. reach heights ’ unknown hitherto when the service gets under way. Not only did Mr AVood attend to the registrations, hut he also assisted subscribers in the selection of their reading, and in many ways facilitated the inauguration of the system. During the period that the library was closed to the public structural alterations were made and now the books are shelved in U manner which makes it easy for patrons to make their selections. Tho system of recording the borrowed books is a simple but efficient one. The public treat any change with a certain, amount of reserve, but a glance at the books in the free service section must’ discount any misgivings about the future success of the library. At a conservative estimate the books which have arrived must be worth at least £4OO, ami at the end of four months a complete new selection will be forthcoming from VYellington.
