NEW CHIEF OF STAFF.
BIG STRUGGLE PREDICTED
TOKIO, Oct. 2
General Sugiyama. at present Supreme War Councillor, has been appointed Chief of the General .Staff, replacing Field-Marshal Prince Kotohito Kanin, who has resigned, believing he has accomplished his task with the Chinese war. The final stage of t'lie early establishment of the new domestic national structure is assured. Japan is now in a stronger position to construct the “New Order.” The Asahi Shimbun predicts that it the British and Americans ban oil, rubber, and tin exports Japan will choose an “all or nothing struggle rather than await death. The Asahi Shimbun’s Batavia correspondent says the tripartite pact has greatly influenced the trade negotiations between Japan and the Netherlands East Indies. It is expected to be known whether an agreement can be concluded within a fortnight. It showed that Japan was “unmistakeably resolved” to do. everything to construct a Greater East Asia.
