JAPANESE WARSHIPS
LYING OFF WEI-HAI-WEI
POPULACE ALARMED
(United Press Association —Copyright.) Received October 4, IT. 10 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Oct. 3.
It is reported that sis Japanese destroyers, a cruiser, and a transport are anchored off the island of Wei-hai-wei, which the Chungking Government has just leased to Britain for another ten years.
The Nanking regime recently informed the British Government that it did not recognise Chungking's right to lease the island and that it would consider . Britain was infringing China’s territorial integrity if the island were not evacuated.
Foreigners in Wei-hai-wei are said to be in a considerable state of alarm lest the presence of the Japanese ships is connected with a possible attempt to force Britain to evacuate the island.
Naval circles in Shanghai, however, state that tbe mainland opposite the island is being used as a training centre for Mr Wang Ching-wei’s new Chinese navy.-.: I t is possible the Japanese ships are there in order to assist in such training.
