ENTRAINING TROOPS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —One cannot compliment the Defence Authorities on their crude arrangements for entraining troops at the Railway Station to-day. With the exception of one bewildered looking sergeant armed with an order board under his arm, who threaded his way through the crowd, there appeared to bo no officer in charge of the troops. During the last war there would have been an 11.T.0. on the platform, which would have been roped off, a suitable placard indicating the troops to be accommodated would have been affixed to each carriage, and after the men had been told off to their allotted carriage, the public, would have been admitted to the enclosure to farewell their relations.
To-day the men had to force their way through the crowd to find places in the carriages wherever they could. There was no semblance of order or discipline. and many of us who tried to farewell friends could not do so because it Was impossible to move about in the large crowd—soldiers and civilians all mixed up together.—l am, etc.,
GENERAL ORDER Palmerston North, 3-10-40.
