The Dannevirke district Spitfire _ fund closed on Monday, when up to mid-day £7BO had been subscribed. The London relief fund then stood at £162 13s 9d. Between 60 and 70 teachers from primary schools between Orniondvilic and Woodvillc began on Monday hi North School, Dannevirke, a three-day refresher course. Mr 15. K. Lomas, inspector of schools, summarised the courses to lie held, and Mr G. J. Gokfeman, president of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Educational Institute, welcomed the visitors. Mr H. S. M. Quigley, a member of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, extended a welcome on behalf of the board, and expressed the hope that the teachers, and ultimately their pupils, would derive benefit from the course. A lantern lecture, illustrating phases of physical education in England, and indicating the progressive development of the scheme, was given by Mr P. Smithells, Director of Physical Education.

The monthly united intercessory service, he.d in the Methodist Church on Tuesday, was again very w’ell attended. Rev. T. Coals worth conducted the service, and an impressive address was delivered by Captain IT. Jones, of the Salvation Army. A 13-year-old Maori boy, Rau Kuraitiana, the son of Mr Arapata Karaitiana, of Oringi, was found lying unconscious on the main Napier Road about 1A miles south of Oringi on Sunday by a passing motorist. The boy was taken to the Dannevirke Hospital, where it was discovered that he had a fractured skull. It appeared that he had fallen lroin his bicycle.

l At a meeting of the Dannevirke Borough Council it was decided to increase the salaries and wages of members of the borough staff which, were not covered by the Court of Arbitration’s five per cent wages increase. Each case was treated separately, and some of the increases are : 'town clerk, from £475 to £500; engineer, ; from £462 10s to £475; manager of gas department, from £4OO to £412 10s. Adjustments were made to the wuges of the outside staff not covered by the Court’s order.

Court, who was injured at the sub-station last Saturday, is progressing well. Mr E. J. Single, for some time a member of the railway slafi' at Woodvillc, has been transferred to New Plymouth, to which centre he and Mrs Single departed on Monday. This morning, members of the Patriotic Committee, R.S.A. and friends fnrewelled Mr J. M. Penney, of the sub station staff, who has left to join the engineers’ section now at Trentlmm. Mr Penny, received the customary gifts and hearty good wishes from those- present. Mr P. Butler, u member or the Woodvillc R.S.A.. lias left to take up an appointment at Burnham Camp. On Tuesday evening he was presented with gifts from the Patriotic.* Society and R.S.A. Mr J. Charles (R.S.A.) congratulated the recipient on his appointment. Mr II Conlon. of Mangarawa. recently visited Wellington to attend the funeral of his mother. M,rs J. Fulton, of Woodvillc, is visiting h‘or sister, Miss T. Hay, in Auckland.
