(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEWBURY, Sept. 24. At the September meeting of the Women’s Institute, Mrs Shaw presiding, the sixth birthday was celebrated. The sum of 12s 6d was collected to forward to the leper station, and it was decided to send Christmas parcels to the local men on active service, these to be packed at the October meeting. A very interesting letter was read from the link institute, in Surrey, England the writer saying how very impressed the English, people were with the New Zealand soldiers. The competition for a pair of girls’ bloomers was won by Mrs J. Macauley, Mrs L. Healey being second, and - Mrs Clapcott third; flower. Mrs M. Hansen (tulip) 1; Mrs L Healey 2, Mrs S. Death 3. The compel titions for next month will be for four sultana rock cakes and the best flower and the hostesses will be-Mesdames G. 'Gore and S. Knight, A beautiful birthday cake with six candles, made by Mrs J. Lancaster and iced by Mrs Taylor, adorned the table the candles were lit by Mrs Shaw and blown out by Mi-9 Simpson’ and the cake was cut by Mrs McLennan, representing the Manawatu Federation, who wished the Newbury Institute many happy returns of the day. The three vice-presi-dents, Mesdames F. Vorry, S. Death and J. Lancaster cut up the cake and handed it round to the visitors and members. A lucky cup prize was won by Mrs C. Cameron, and a knitting prize by Mrs L HealeyMrs Spencer contributed humorous recitations. Mrs McLennan and Mrs Spencer judged the competitions, for which they were thanked. The hostesses were Mrs S. Death and Miss Lynch The friends of Mrs John Cheetham will regret to learn that she is a private hos-pital-in Palmerston North and will wish her an early recovery Mr Jack Scrimshaw is still in hospital.
