DEATH OF SIR O. LODGE. INTEREST IN SPIRITUALISM. Received August 23, 11.38 a.m. LONDON, Aug., 22. The veteran scientist Sir Oliver Lodge died to-day, aged 89 years. Although 'he was a physicist who made many contributions to modern science and a philosopher with a considerable influence on modern thought, Sir Oliver will nevertheless be chiefly remembered by laymen for his work in connection with wireless telegraphy and his championship of the spiritualistic evidenco of survival.

Sir Oliver Lodge, who was knighted in 1902, was a member of the Royal Society and a Doctor of Science (London University). He held honorary Doctorates of Science from the Oxford, Cambridge. Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds, Adelaide and Toronto Universities, and in addition, held the degrees of Master of Arts and membership of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. Sir Oliver was principal of the University of Birmingham from 1909 to 1919. He was educated at the University of London. From 1381 until the end of the last century he was Professor of Physics at Liverpool University, and in 1903 he was appointed Romance Lecturer at Oxford. Among the honours which he gained were the following: Rumford Medallist of the Royal Society (1898), president of the Mathematical and Physical Section of the British Association (1391), president of tho Physical Society of London (18991900), president oE the Society for Physical Research (1901-4 and 1932), president of the British Association (1913-14), Albert Medallist of tho Royal Society of Arts as a pioneer in wireless telegraphy (1919), Faraday Medallist and hon. member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (1932). He was tho author of many scientific publications. The late Sir Oliver Lodge had six sons and eix daughters, the eldest of the sons gaining distinction as a playwright.
