COUNCIL BUSINESS. BOUNDARY CHANGE OPPOSED. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held yesterday when those present were Crs W. E. Barber (chairman), W. E. Pearce, A. N. Morcom, J. Boyce, H. J. Fagan and It. A. Wilson. Leave of absence was granted Cr D. W. Reid. Further details of the arrangements for evacuated children were forwarded in a circular from the Minister of Internal Affairs. —The council received the circular and is to consider a suggestion I)3’ Cr Fagan that the cooperation of a woman member of the Patriotic Committee be sought for reports on homes. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that a petition had been presented by Louisa Grace Thompson and others for the alteration of the boundaries of Foxton borough by the exclusion of a certain piece of land from the borough and its inclusion in the Manawatu county. An objection had Iwen lodged by the Fop:ton Borough Council. It was reported that the County Council had also lodged an objection. The county clerk (Mr A. Iv. Drew) said that the area was about one-third of the total area of the borough, and amounted to about 500 acres. The special rates amounted to about lOd in the £ in any case. The council confirmed the objection already made. The Department of Agriculture forwarded an outline of conditions on which the engineer (Mr H. V. Bond) could be appointed an inspector of noxious weeds.—The council decided to proceed with the matter. The Feilding branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, replying to advice that the council could not take action for the provision of a watering trough on the old Sandon Road stated, that the society was willing, to .provide half the cost. — Received.

Mr H. J. Lancaster (Glen Oroua). wrote expressing the appreciation of the settlors for improvements being effected on Couper’s Lino. —Received. , Inspector D. M. Ford presented a report on his activities in the inspection of roads during month. The engineer (Mr H. Y. Bond) and tho chairman were given authority to act in regal’d to an application by' Mr A. Ashby to fence oif an old road at Foxton. The Manawatu branch of the Crippled Children Society applied for a renewal of the council’s grant of £lo. A grant of £5 is to bo made. The tramway manager (Mr A. K. Drew) reported as follows: —The items of traffic for the month were: Metal, 205 c. yds; minerals, 4S.j tons; merchandise, 2 tons; manure, 174 tons; iron, steel, etc., 2 tons; general items, -J- ton. The earnings were £lO3 18s 6d and the running expenses £145 10s 3d, showing a debit balance of £4l 17s 9d. The treasurer (Mr Drew) reported that the county fund account was in debit by £6BB3'Os 9d and the loan account in credit by £BO 19s sd. The receipts since the last meeting, totalling £3493 7s 4d. included £275 14s 2d from'rates, £lls 8s 8d from licenses and £3102 4s 6d from miscellaneous sources. The report also stated ; “Since the last meeting a drive has been made to collect outstanding rates and to date tlie sum of £339 4s 4d lias been collected. Arrangements have been made by several ratepayers to forward a payment about the 20th instant and in other cases monthly instalments are being accepted.”
