BETTER HOMES FOR NATIVES.
Following is a letter from the District Office of the Native Department regarding the Maori Rehabilitation Association at Otaki: “I was pleased to receive your letter of the 3rd inst. showing the aims of your association among the Alaori people of Otaki. 1 know that the Nativo Minister is con-, eerned about the neglected appearance of the pa area and would like to See it rectified. 1 was in Otaki recently and the supervisor informed me that certain Alaori lands, including the pa area, had been cleared of gorse on two occasions and that the Alaoris had not valued the work done by keeping the land clear. It is preferable that any efforts for their rehabilitation should come from themselves or from their ■leaders nr advisers, l understand that many of the Maori people arc drawing rents, or are working, and if one or two could he encouraged to put aside a portion of their money when received and apply same in buying paints and brushes, or in fencing and other requirements, the others would, no doubt, follow their example. Mr Mulcaliv will.-no doubt, he pleased to give the association any assistance he can.— Yours, etc., P. Hudson, Registrar.” The association is to give immediate effect to this recommendation.
