MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

The fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Feilding was held today, Mr It. M. Watson, S.M., presiding. Pleading guilty to a charge of fading to yield the right of way to a pedestrian on an authorised pedestrian crossing, L. K. Brady was fined 30s, with costs. For failing to give way to traffic approaching on his right. T. H. Glen, of Feilding, was fined £2, with costs 10s. The charge arose out of an accident which occurred at the intersection of lvimbolton Road and Manchester Street. H. P. Standing, licensee of the Manchester Hotel, was convicted and fined. £7, with costs 10s, for selling liquor after hours, while on charges of exposing liquor and keeping his hotel open after hours he was convicted and ordered to pay costs only. A. A. McGregor, licensee of the Feilding Hotel, was fined £lO. with costs 10s, on a charge of selling liquor after hours. Mr T. Pagan appeared for defendant and represented that the latter had made an improvement in the conduct of the hotel since his last conviction. In regard to the present charge there had only been one person served with liquor, and the barman had supplied the liquor (one drink) only after having been pestered by the person supplied. Sergeant Turner said that the licensee had made j structural improvements to the premises and had tried to make amends for previous convictions. The Magistrate in imposing the fine said he had j taken into account the represents- j tions made. However, he found it j necessary to take into account the facj;: that the premises had been freoucntly ! used since 1938 for after hours 1 trading although there had been an improvement since the last conviction. This was the fourth time in less than two and a-quarter years that the licensee had been convicted for selling liquor after hours. Such trading bad to cease, added the Magistrate, who ordered that a record of the conviction be endorsed on the license. The barman, E. H. Cleveland, was fined £5, with costs 10s, for supplying the liquor. j
