HIDES AND SKINS.

ACCUMULATION OF STOCKS. •AUCKLAND, Aug. 12. With export markets reduced by war conditions, stocks of hides and skins arc steadily accumulating in the Dominion. The trade has suffered a sharp .setback in the past two months and, though exporters are still operating in New"' Zealand, prices have shown a downward tendency at successive auctions. It was stated that, when the Allies were purchasing on a big scale through the British hides pool, before the German occupation of France and the Low Countries, contracts were arranged which were likely to place a heavy demand on world resources. However, the contracts had to be cancelled in May and June, and Britain was left with greater supplies than could be immediately absorbed. The rose It had been an accumulation of stocks, with consequent falls in the price levels. Attempts were being made, it' was added, to develop the trade in hides with the United States. Those possibilities were being explored by South Africa, India, South America and other countries, and the United States appeared to be in the position of hoing offered more hides than sho needed.
