A email sedan car driven by Mrs N. i Davidson, of Hastings, skidded in some 1 loose metal in the vicinity of Mr G. Hartridge’s residence, Napier Road, yesterday morning and came to rest in on its side in a ditch. Mrs Davidson, who was the 6ole occupant, had a fortunate escape from serious injury, though she suffered slight shock and bruises. The car, which was later towed into Woodville, was considerably damaged. Mrs Davidson was on her way to Palmerston North from Hastings at the time of the mishap. A telegraphic chess match between members of the Woodville and Waipukurau clubs was held on Saturday evening. Although none of the games was completed, the decision was given to Waipukurau by mutual consent in four matches, to Woodville in three, and three have, yet to be adjudicated. The Woodville Golf Club’s activities during the week-end included a Stableford ■ singles competition which was won by P. Maurice with a score of 38 points. Maurice, whose handicap was 15, has been playing consistently good golf of late and as a result has had his handicap reduced by five strokes. Others who performed creditablv were W. J. Goodwin (handicap 1) 37 and , R. L. Paterson (4) 36. R. Gibbs’s net > score of 30 points gave him a win in a ninc-
hole eclectic competition. Good cards were also returned by R. Peebles (32) and Y. Baker (32j).
SOLDIER SPORTSMEN. In recognition of their services to various sports clubs, five district members of the forces were tendered a dance by the kindred sports bodies presentation and social committee on Saturday evening. The Women's Institute Hall was well filled for the function, which was the second of its kind held by tho Committee. The soldiers honoured were Private T. Gardner, who before entering camp had belonged to the Hockey, Badminton, Golf, Swimming and Athletic and Cycling Clubs and the Woodlands Road and Woodville Tennis Clubs; Private S. Halford and Sapper W. McKinlay, members of the Woodville Football Club; and Sappers H. E. Core,ton and J. Williams, members of the Railway Sports Club. These men and several others who were the guests of the committee were welcomed by the chairman (Mr J. Sullivan) who called on the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs R. R. Johnston), to make the presentations. The Mayor, in extending good wishes to the soldiers, said he was sure they oould be counted on to perform the arduous task ahead of them e\ cry bit as well as the gallant men of the R.A.F. were doing their duty to-day. Civilians, 100, had a part to play in providing for the rehabilitation of the. men on their return and the immediate aim of patriotic endeavour would be to build up funds for this purpose. The Mayoress presented the men with well-filled money belts. Music was supplied free of charge by Messrs L. Spelmah and H. Prime, Mr L. Henry playing an extra. The M.C. was Mr S. J. Worboys. A Monte Carlo competition was won by Mrs Halpin and partner and a euchre tournament for nondancers by Mrs Gardner and Mrs Lynch. Special competitions were won by Bruce Paterson and Mrs B. Penney.
