JAPANESE RAID

CHUNGKING AGAIN BOMBED. THOUSAND CASUALTIES. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright.) Received August 10, p.m. CHUNGKING, Aug. 9. ' A hundred Japanese planes to-day bombed Chungking. The casualties are estimated at 1000, mostly civilians. Six areas within the city were set on fire. The American Methodist Mission school and physics building were damaged. Fires broke out near the United States Embassy. A Shanghai message says the Japanese assert that the above-mentioned raid wrecked and burned Marshal Chiang Kai-shek’s residence. The British withdrawal of troops will make the Japanese Rear-Admiral Moriji Takeda Commander of the Shanghai Defence Forces, including the Fourth Regiment of United States Marines. Mr Mayou Feng, described as Mr Wang Ching-wei’s lieutenant, was shot dead to-day in the International Settlement. The murderer escaped.
