Captain I. 0. Manson. of Invercargill, who is in England with the Second Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has been appointed bri-gade-major of the sth Infantry Brigade. The sth Infantry Brigade is commanded by Brigadier J. Hargest. Injuries which were received in an air bombing in Egypt by Driver J. A. Graham, formerly of Napier and now a member of the First Echelon of the Second N.Z.E.F., were not as serious as was first thought. He is reported to be progressing satisfactorily i but is still in hospital. Hon. It. Semple, Minister of Public Works, was to have visited Palmerston North to-day and inspected the works of the Palmerston North River Board. He ivas, however, unable to make the visit, being detained by business in the Bay of Plenty. Another date will be arranged for his visit to Palmerston North. It is announced that Mr G. Beresford Stook (Deputy Chief Secretary of Kenya), has been selected Chief Secretary and Financial Secretary of Zanzibar, in succession to Mr S. B. B. McElderry, who has retired from the Colonial Administrative Service, states the British Official Wireless. The Government has appointed Hon. V A. Ward, M.L.C., and Mr J. Abel to fill the vacancies on the National Patriotic Councd created by the appointment of Hon. F. Waite, M.L.C., as Gifts Commissioner abroad for the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces and the departure for England of Dr A. Gillies.

The Bishop of Waikato (.Rt. Rev. G. A. Clierrington 8.A., 8.D.) is visiting Palmerston North tins week-end. This is the first time the Bishop has paid an official visit to Palmerston North since his consecration to the Bishopric of Waikato in 1926. During his stay he will be the guest of Canon and Mrs Woodward at the Vicarage, and will bo officiating at the services at All Saints’ Church.
