HOROWHENUA COUNTY

COUNCIL BUSINESS. Cr G. A. Monk was in the chair at a meeting of the Horowliemia Council yesterday. Also present were Qrs A. P. Jensen, A. M. Colquhoun, A. J. Gimblett, D. K. Guy and J. D. Aitcliison. Leave of absence was granted Crs L. H. Best, F. J. Ryder, and A. M. Atkins. The Public Works Department advised the details of the land and road improvement votes in the Wellington district. In the Horowhenua county the votes were £450 for the Ivoputaroa Stream bridge, and £75 for the Otaki footbridge. The Local Government Loans Board acknowledged the council’s application for the sanctioning of a loan of £IO,OOO for the purposes of making advances to farmers under the Rural Housing Act. It advised that the sanction had been granted. The term was for 25 years. The State Advances Corporation wrote approving of tho loan. Mr J. W. Richardson wrote asking the council to give him access to his property.—The ohairman moved that Mr Richardson be asked to apply to the Native Land Court for access. The council had no jurisdiction over native land. This was carried. The Otaki branch of tho Blanket Society wrote seeking a donation to its funds. —A grant of £4 was made Tho Shannon Dairy Company wrote asking that the council metal the top end of Campbell Road. —Referred to the engineer. Mr R. Hayes, of Shannon, in a letter asked that metal he placed on Stout Street near his property.—Referred to the engineer. Three ratepayers of the Te Horo township wrote drawing attention to the state of tho footpaths on the main road and said that these were overgrown with weeds and the surfaces were badly broken. —The chairman said that a subsidy for the work could be obtained from the Public Yorks Department. Cr Jensen stated that there was a lot of traffic through Te Horo and the work was really an urgent matter. The question was referred to the engineer to present a report on the cost. „ _ The Mayor of Otaki (Mr C. 1' • Atmore) advised that the Otaki River was causing considerable erosion on Mr Hughes’s farm at the hack of the racecourse. The Mayor asked the council to take the matter up with the Public Works Department.—The chairman said the trouble was caused by the Otaki River Board going out ot existence. “I think that the engineer an d a committee of tho council should make an inspection of the river, hut they should be accompanied by representatives of the Otaki Borough Councl],'” ]io said. Cr Jensen sunported the suggestion that the committee inspect the river and make application to the Public Works Department. The chairman moved that Crs Ryder. Jensen and Colquhoun inspect the river, and tin's was carried. The engineer (Mr ,T. T. M. Brewster) reported on general work carried out in the county. _ A deputation consisting of Messrs K,T. Law and A. Cottle, of the Bucklev Drainage Board, waited on tho council seeking monetary assistance for the deepening and widening of a drain through the Ivoputaroa Valley to lavistock Road. Mr Law said that the work in the valley was nearly finished and tho Buckley hoard was iceen to keep the machine that was being used in the district. Bv deepening and widening the drain the land, which was valued to as low as £2 15s an acre, would become one of the best portions in the council’s area. The farmers in the area were to pav 15s an acre towards the work end they sought £/0 from the council. The hoard was receiving a £ for £ subsidy from the Government. . , After a number of questions nao been asked and the deputation had retired, it was decided that the matter lie left to the works committee and the engineer to make a report.
