POHANGINA COUNTY.

COUNCIL BUSINESS At the monthly meeting of .the Pohangina County Council, yesterday, there wore present Crs S. J. Stratum (chairman), M. Arbon, P. Jensen. H B. Clapham, IV. Howell, IV. McKay, and T. E. Crainc. Appreciative letters were received from Messrs J. Linklater and IV. J. Croucher, the council having written congratulatory letters to them as leaders in the movement for the provision of the memorial to the pioneers at Alt. Stewart.

Permission was granted Mr T. IV. Pratt (Apiti) to lay a water-pipe' across a roadw r ay. Mr J. S. Mclntyre (Ridge Road; sought permission to erect a fence on a road line and the matter was referred to the engineer (Mr D. Watson) Mr W. Hogan (Apiti) advised that all the trustees of the Apiti Cemetery had been re-elected, at a public meeting of allotment holders. as follow. Messrs W. J. Osborne, IV. Hogan, J. F. Jv. Jensen, H. A. Wildbore and W. Duncan. The chairman said the district was very fortunate to have sucli good trustees. They had done a lot of work at the cemetery, which was a credit to them. On his motion the council commended the trustees and approved of their appointment for the ensiling period of seven years. The council decided that when the grader is next in the area the parking place at the cemetery should l>e levelled off. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) asked in a circular if the council had taken action under the emergency precautions scheme.— After a short discussion the council decided to form itself into a provisional committee and enquiries are to be made as to the directions in which residents could give the best service should occasion arise.

The engineer reported generally on activities during the month, this being mainly attention to roads with the grader and the carting and spreading of gravel. The tractor had been fitted with special road grips and a bulldozer attachment, which would make it very helpful in stripping metal pits. The ranger (Mr T. It. Gore) reported that in the past month he had impounded seven head of stock. The treasurer (Mr A. E. Orgias) reported that the following credits lay at the bank: Cemetery account, £34 8s lOd; plant account. £sl Is lOd; loan account, £359 10s lid ; loan assets realisation. £450. The county fund account, after adjustments, showed a debit of £1950 6s sd.

The engineer was authorised to provide a number of fencing posts for the Pohangina Young Farmers’ Club to be used in fencing a plantation at the deviation at Raumai. Cr Jensen urged that more metal be used in the Umutoi riding, saying there was good metal available if motive power were provided for the crusher. He suggested that the tractor be equipped with a licit drive and the engineer was authorised to procure this attachment.
