BARLEY FOR PIGS.
| MANAWATU FARMERS’ TASK. A discussion took place at a meeting of the Wellington District Pig Council, on Thursday, regarding the quantity of home-grown barley likely to be forthcoming during the present season. From information received, there appeared to be grave doubts that Manawatu farmers would ’ be sowing the acreage iii barley that was at first anticipated, and apprehension was felt in consequence. It was explained that probably the urgent need for barley had not been sufficiently emphasised by the local committees and that those who were now in the habit of growing wheat would continue to do so without extending their operations to embrace on area of barley wherever possible. Seeing that increased production of pig meat was wholly dependent on ample supplies of supplementary foodstuffs, it was decided to approach the local Primary Production Council immediately with the request that prospective supplies of locally grown barley be investigated with a view to removing any existing doubts regarding restricted areas being sown with this crop. The chairman, Mr B. E. Keiller, stated that it could not be too strongly emphasised that from 25,000 to 30,000 acres of barley would be needed, and grain growing districts were expected to enter whole-heartedly into this phase of increased production.
