RED CROSS CONCERT. The Institute Hall was packed to the doors on Thursday on the occasion of ihe concert arid dance staged by the Women © Institute Glee Club in aid of _ the ned Cross Society’s funds. Th/e bright programme submitted was characterised b> attractive costuming and excellent presentation, and the audience showed much appreciation. A large number of local artiste and some from Palmerston North took part and not a little of the outstanding success achieved was due to the organising ability of the producer, Mrs J. McCormick. The concert opened with a nigger nnnstrol show in which traditional negro humour and plantation melodies were presented in an .original form. The Wood vine Darmonica Band, led by Mr A. r l. Walker, assisted in this item and the soloists wore
Mesdames H. McNeil, T. .Smith and B. Schroder and Messrs T. Smith and JCharles. Mrs W. Galbraith presided at the piano and Mise N. Houlbrooke gave a recitation. A humorous play, “The Bosun s Ghost,” written by Rev. B. P. Williams, of Woodvillc, and acted by Messrs K. Strand and S. J. Worboys was followed by a sailor’s tap ballet by Miss I. Olliver (Palmerston North) and three of her pupiß, Misses J. Bonny, J. Foster and. IAyres. A song and dance number, L’ttlc Quaker.” was pleasingly rendered by Miss Dawn Soli it, of Palmerston North. Nannies,” a humorous sketch performed by Misses ,T. Stevenson and j- Kirkpatrick, was a popular item, as also was a vocal duo in character by Charles and E. McNeil, with chorus, entitled Down on the Farm.” Another popular sketch was that of Mrs Schroder and Mr R. MeCu»lougb, entitled “If ’Those Lips Could Only Speak.” The programme concluded with a specfaeu’ar presentation, “Spirit of. the Empire.” The military costuming, fine chorus work and display of marching to patriotic songs of the day and also of tile 1914-18 period marked this as a novel item and one of the best, of the evening. ’lhe solo work was again excellently done by Messrs Charles and Smith. ’lhe Mayor (Mr R. R. Johnston) thanked the public for their wholehearted support and the glee club for arranging the entertainment, which was a credit to all concerned. The floor was afterwards cleared for dancing. The M.O. was Mr Robolham and music was supplied by Mcsdamcs Sebrodcr and Chatficld and Messrs J. Brooker and E. McNeil.
