LIGHT HORSE BREEDERS

ASSOCIATION FORMED. At a meeting of eleven light horse breeders at tbe Winter Show, it was decided to form an organisation to be known as the New Zealand Light Horse Society. All the breeders present cime from the North Island.

Mr T: V. Caverhill (Mlastcrton) said - that the society should be able to on- : rol some 4000 or 5000 members. If all : the show associations supported the i society, it should be possible for the j latter to provide prize money for the : light horse breeds at the various 1 shows. Shows were not complete without ring events. Mr \V. H. Booth (Carterton); who : was appointed to the chair, consider- : cd the' suggestion to form a society i vyas an excellent one. The Royal Agri- ; cultural Society had always been -at a, loss in appointing judges for light horses, since they had ; no organisation to appeal to in order to secure suitable judges. The society should aim at improving the breed of horses and poni® bv. arranging lectures by qualified veterinary surgeons and to enlighten judges on the correct conformation of the horse, having regard to soundness. He agreed that the situa-

tion in Europe suggested that the present might not be the best time to form the society. The secretary ■ pro' tem (Mr 11. H. Williams) said lie had written to 13 agricultural and pastoral societies in the Wellington and Hatvke’s Bay provinces. and some of them had promised to send delegates to the ingseveral of those present expressed ■the opinion that it would be preferable to form an organisation when there were better prospects of success. There was general agreement on tlie' necessity lor such a society. "Mr Caverhill pointed out that mcmberd had come long distances and were representative of a wide area,’ and the opportunity to form a society might not come again for some time. A resolution forming the society was then adopted. Objects approved were to increase prize money at all shows and improve the breed of horses and ponies bv arranging lectures. Mr Caverhill stressed the desirability of judges being members of, and appointed by,' the society. He stated that most judges’ lists at the various shows were obsolete and incomplete and should bo- brought up-to-date. Mr Booth said it would be prefer--1 able for the show societies’ lists of judges to-be cancelled and for the new society to draw up a fresh list. Some discussion arose on a proposal that all competitors must be members of the" society before they could claim prizes donated by the society, the opinion being advanced that many young people would be barred. Mr T. V. Morriu (Hawke’s Bay) considered the children’s classes should be given every encouragement and he suggested that prizes be given to the best boy and girl rider, . It was decided'that all competitors in hack classes must lie members before they could claim the society’s prizes. The annual membership fee was fixed at ys.

The members present, with additional jiersons nominated,’ were formed into a provisional Committee to further the interests of the; 'society, as follow :—Messrs W. H. Booth (Carterton), F. Lyons. T. V. Morrin, A. Ayers (Hawke’s Bay), T. V. Caverhill (Masterton), W. E. Olsen (Pahiatua), T. B. Baker (Raetihi); F. McLean, J. Caithness (Alarton), L. H. Collinson (Palmerston North), A. McNab (Wanganui). J. B. Bradley (Feikling), ]>. B. McEwen (Kairanga), 1. Kiisby (Levin), F. Cottrell, A. K. Overton (Taihape), G. Hobson (Wood.villej. Messrs Booth and Caverhill were appointed a' committee to prepare rules and regulations, and Mr Williams was appointed honorary secretary. It was agreed that the societv help the Government in the war effort in any way possible
