EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” JUNE'IS, 1910. A disastrous fire had occurred at MiVngawelca, four business premises and one dwelling-house being destroyed. A deputation from the Foxton Harbour Board had waited on the Government with reference to the purchasing of the wharf. The Minister said the cost would be about £23,000. He suggested as an alternative that the board make a rating area and he would ask the Prime Minister to make an endowment. A special ,reception ivas being ‘ arranged by the Feilding and Manawatu A. and P. Associations for Mr E. Short, of Feilding, on his return from the Argentine where he won the world’s championship with his sheep. In five years, Mr Short had won 543 prizes and 34 special awards with., his sheep. A battleship was to be presented to the Royal Navy by the New Zealand Government. Very serious floods were reported in Europe, the worst area being Germany. Communications were severed and there were about 300 deaths.
