UNIVERSITY ACTIVITIES.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —May I inform your readers of the aims and objects of various student activities connected with , the forthcoming capping week. We feel that we owe this explanation to the public because of the modifications that have been made in our programme resulting from the change in the overseas situation. (1) The decision of the Students’ Association to run their capping collection for funds for the Y.W.C.A. was made because it was felt that this organisation fully merits our support and the support of the people of Palmerston North, not only because of its routine activities but also because of its sterling work in connection with the entertainment of the Maori Battalion while in Palmerston North, and because of further work it intends carrying on in supplying comforts to the battalion overseas. (2) Whereas our original intention was to lend all revue profits to the Government as an interest-free loan for the duration of the war, backed by strong student feeling the executive has in view of the gravity of the present situation decided that all profits accruing from “Masskerade” be donated to the National Patriotic Fund. (3) In the past the graduation ball has been held to entertain our graduands with no thought of any profit. This year, however, we feel that a change in policy is warranted and the ball committee is budgeting for a profit, which will be added to the revue profits and will thus go as a contribution to the National Patriotic Fund. Thus this year we appeal to the public of Palmerston North not on our own behalf but in support of what may be called a national appeal.— Yours, etc., H. B. LAWRY. President, M.A.C. Students’ Association.
