RESPONSE TO APPEAL. (Bv Telegraph —Special to Standard.) i .WELLINGTON. June 14 The response of men on public works to the Government’s appeal to transfer to farm work has been excellent, according to a statement of the Minister of Labour (Hon. P. C. Webb). Already 2000’ men have been interviewed and of’those 1000 expressed a keen desire to co-operate in every way to take farm work No fewer than 500 had farm experience. The number of farm vacancies notified to June S was 90 throughout the Dominion, 62 being for experienced and 28 for inexperienced men. Ihe Labour Department also had , the names, of 460 other men, including experienced workers. The Government pays a subsidy of 30s a week for inexperienced men employed on farms for the first 6ix months and 15s a week for the second six months.
