REARMAMENT DRIVE. HELP FOR ALLIES. WASHINGTON, June 12. The Secretary of War (Mr H. H. •Woodring) has announced that the United States is shortly sending a force of field artillery and infantry to Anchorage to protect the army’s new Alaskan air bases. President Roosevelt is planning to place all Government navy yards and arsenals on a 24-lxour day, three-shift basis to accelerate rearmament. The navy has announced that contracts totalling 327,000,000 dollars have been awarded for 22 new ships, including two battle-ships, eight destroyers, two cruisers, and six submarines. Representative Celler has announced that lie is introducing a Bill to repeal the legal prohibitions against Americans enlisting in the Allied Forces. He urged the repeal of the Johnson Act barring loans to debtor nations and predicted that “public opinion will soon be strong enuugn to demand the repeal of the Neutrality Act in its entirety.” * BRAZIL AND U.S.A. HARMONIOUS RELATIONS. » AVASHINGTON, June 12. The Secretary of State (Mr Cordell Hull), i.n a Press statement commenting cn the statement by President Vargas of Brazil, said he could not recall a period when the relations between Brazil and the United States wore more intimate and whole-hearted in understanding, friendliness, and a spirit of co-operation. He added that ' the observation included Brazil’s relationship to the whole inter-American programme in which they were co-op-erating identically.
