DORSET HORN SHEEP.
STUD BREEDERS MEET. ' The annual meeting of the New Zealand Dorset Horn Sheep Breeders’ Society was held a.t the Winter Show yesterday, the retiring president (Mr C. E. Crooks, of Waipukurau) presiding. The report, which was adopted, stated: “The balance-sheet shows a credit of £SO 6s 2d, which must be considered very satisfactory in view of the society’s short existence. An. item which should be mentioned is that of our markers, which arc still unused, and, taken in at their cost price, bring our total assets up to of £64 11s sd. The number of registered flocks has increased steadily, and now stands at 26. an appreciable gain from the seven with which the society commenced. This serves to illustrate the growth in popularity- of the Dorset Horn breed, and augurs well for the future. A further stimulus in this direction is certain to be provided by the results obtained by those flockmasters who made use of Dorset rains last season amongst their cross-bred flocks, the resulting lambs showing excellent carcases, and fully proving the claim to early maturity, which is characteristic of the breed. During the coming season, when more rams will have been in use, it will be interesting to obtain • further data as to weights and grading. Wherever A. and P. societies have provided classes for our sheep, breeders have made good efforts to see that the pens were well filled, and I sincerely hope that they will continue to do so, as showing is undoubtedly our best form of advertising. Before closing. I must mention the Trojan service rendered by our secretary. who was asked to take over the position at very short notice, and who has devoted many hours of his time to the furtherance of the society’s affairs, and has. T am sure, handled the job to everyone’s satisfaction.” The election of officers resulted: President, Mr W. T. Pratt (Apiti); secretary. Mr R. McCay (Hawera); council. Messrs Crooks. A. L. Bremer (Hawera), A. Segrave (Wallacetown), C. C. Laver (Hastings). W. W. Lowe (Ashburton), H.' M. Bosley (New Plymouth) and W. J. Allen (Palmerston North). r ' Appreciation was expressed of the keen and unflagging interest taken in the association’s affairs by Mr Crooks, who had boon president since its inception in 1937, and who did not wish to accept renom.ination. The retiring secretary (Mr J. T. Piki) was accorded a vote 'of thanks for his services as secretary, it being stated that be bad given much time on the association s i behalf. , The. following were, approved as judges: Messrs Allen. D. Walker (Longburn), Bremer, Besley, Pratt, Cray. W. O. Shannon (Palmerston North 1. C. R. Gardner (Waipukurau) and W. T. Low (Ashburton):
