There was a very ini ge attendance, about 130 couples being present. The host and hostess were Mr J. A. Russell, president of the Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Club, and Mrs Russell. Associated with Mrs Russell as hostess were Mesdames C. G. C. Dermer, W. G. Shannon, C. A. Osborne and W. E. Thomas. Joint secretaries for the dance were Messrs E. G. Dobson and H. de 0. Chamberlain. Mr Chamberlain was M.C. and music was played by a professional orchestra.... Among those present were Mr C. G. C. Dermer, who is president of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association, and Mr G. A. Dawiclc, secretary of the association, and Mrs Dawick. During am interval in the programme two trophies were presented. The first was the Chisholm Shield for the Jersey team judging competition, awarded to the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. The shield was presented by Mr Russell, who said that it gave him great pleasure to welcome those present to the dance again this year. The Jersev Breeders’ Club was very pleased to be associated with the Young Farmers’ Club at the~ function, and now that the gathering was firmly established he hoped that it would carry on for a number of years. The Jersey Breeders’ Club had presented the shield not only for competition among Young Farmers’ Clubs, but also among secondary schools. It was unfortunate that last year, because of a misunderstanding, the Young Farmers’ Clubs did not compete, but the High School had given a wonderful performance. Mr H. P. McKay, a member of the school staff, accepted the trophy on behalf of the school. The' Cope Cup for the young farmers’ Rugby seven-a-side tournament, played that afternoon, was presented by Mr R. O. Gloyn, in his capacity as chairman' of the Manawatu District Comiirttee of Young Farmers’ Clubs. He was also captain of the winning Rongotea team. Mr Gloyn said that he hoped that the combined dance would be continued successfully in the future. Conditions were not, good at present, but Young Farmers’ Clubs intended .to hold as many functions as possible. These would be beneficial gatherings. He congratulated unsuccessful teams which took part in the football tournament, mentioning that some had travelled long distances. ft was only the support of these clubs which enabled the tournament to he carried on. The cup was accepted by Mr J. H. Gibbons, chairman of the Rongotea Young Farmers’ Club., ‘ . i- ' •
