WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

MEETING AT MAKINO. At tlie June meeting of the Makino Women’s Institute Mrs W. E. Baker presided. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with Mrs Lassen in the loss of her husband. A notice of motion, to rescind the resolution regarding the sending of a delegate to the conference at-Wellington was carried unanimously. Apologies for absence were .received from Mesdames Wilkinson, Hayden, Laing, Thurston, Mason, Simpson, Ritchie, McGill and Miss Nairn. Mrs Baker read an inspiring motto which was much enjoyed. Mrs Moray asked that parcels be sent in as soon as possible for the Red Cross. Soldiers’ parcels are due at the Community Centre. A very helpful and interesting address on the care and growth of various bulb species was given by Mr A. S. Brewster. After his address he received and answered many questions relating to bulbs and their welfare. Mrs Heayns spoke on the series of lectures on horticulture now taking place in the Community Centre. The competition for three parsnips grown by institute members was won by Mrs Wilton, with Mrs Heayns second. The breakfast tray competition was won by Mrs Vincent, with Mrs Heayns second; spray of berries. Mrs Morav 1, Mrs Heayns 2, Miss Oldfield 3. Next month’s competitions are: Three date scones, and an Iceland poppy. The hostesses for July are Mesdames Teague, Ritchie. Lamberton, and Wilkinson. A competition was won by Mrs H. Frecklington. Mrs Moray’s competition in aid of Red Cross Funds realised £2 13s 3d. KAIRANGA INSTITUTE. At a meeting of the Kairanga Institute Mrs G. Davcy presided. A vole was taken as to the advisability of holding the birthday ball, the majority being in favour of it being held. It was decided to hold .it early in August, the proceeds to bn devoted to patriotic purposes. Mrs McClelland kindly offered to make the cake, and members, in view of the shortage of tinned fruits, each offered to contribute a bottle of preserves. In view of her approaching marriage and departure from the district, Miss 11. Hall tendered her resignation, which was accepted with regret. A gift afternoon is arranged and will be held for Miss Hall. - The. programme for July will be: Seniors and juniors, ,f SomeUiing new from something old material)”; roll-call cooking hints; debate, “Large and Small Families.” The hostesses will be Mesdames Sevierts, Small, Pedersen and Mallett. The demonstration was given by Mrs F. Murphy, who explained the making of a crocheted bed jacket. The competitions resulted: Three blooms, Mrs E. Kilgour 1, Mrs C. Turner 2, Mrs 11. Turner 3; seniors, eggless chocolate cake, Mrs 0. Collis 1, Mrs R. Mitchell 2. Mrs G. Davev 3; juniors, plain scones, Miss J. Kilgour 1, Mrs A. Parkin 2, Miss 11. IT Ml 3.
