outset as to the success of Rugby football iu the Woodville district this year, the present prospects are bright and indicate tliat there will be no dearth of players of the national game in the forthcoming season. Some idea of the material likely to be available was afforded in a practice match between Woodville and Mangatainoka on Saturday afternoon, which the town fifteen won by 9 points to 6. Though, as was to be expected in an opening game, there was very little semblance of combined play, several of the backs on both sides showed up individually. Both sets of forwards went well. Woodville’s score was made up of three unconverted tries by P. Burlace, It. Vowell and •F. Rossiter. Burlace’s try was a particularly fine effort following a smart interception and a strong run in from half-way. For the losers, J. Tait and D. Bicknell scored tries, neither of which was converted. W. McKinlay, Court and It. Vowel] wore outstanding in the Woodville pack, while Bolton, Rossiter and G. Burlace showed promise among the backs. Competition for the Dewar Cup will commence on Saturday next with a I match between Woodville and' Mangatainoka. This trophy is for a triangular competition among teams representing the Mangatainoka, Woodville and Rangers (Danncvirke) clubs. Woodville’s entry of a senior team in the Bush Union’s competitions this season is being watched with interest and lias been responsible for a revival of enthusiasm among local footballers.
