HERD RECORDING WORK. Procedure which, has been adopted l>v the Herd Recording Council of the New Zealand Dairy Board for the improvement of the production of dairy herds and the reduction of disease therein was dealt with by Mr R. A. Candv. of Ngarita. chairman of the council, when speaking at the meeting of dairy factory representatives and individual dairy fanners in Palmerston North yesterday. In referring to the council’s herd improvement plan, Mr Candv said the cost was borne equally by the Dairy Board and the Government. Ho showed that there was a considerable margin in which improvement could be effected in order lo bring production, up to the standard of Danish dairy farming. The herd-testing movement had undergone considerable reorganisation and to-da.v there were six Herd Improvement Associations which aimed at increasing the production per cow per year and also tho productive life of the cows bv combating disease. It was necessary to ascertain the average efficiency per row, and to this end a return was asked for as at January 10. This figure of average efficiency also had a bearing on the assessment of the standard of efficiency per unit of labour. The figure set for an efficient cow was 2501 b of butterfat. and a<? tho nrpsent average was in the' vicinity of 2001 b there was a good deal of leeway to make up.
