OBITUARY.

MRS HENRIETTA MOWLEM. The death occurred in Palmerston North recently of Airs Henrietta Alowlem in her 90th year. The deceased lady, who was o.ne of the old identities, was born in South Shields, England, in 1850, and when a child of four years left with her parents, Air and Mrs J. Alould, for Australia in the ship Wild Duck. She lived in Williamstowu until her marriage to the late Air James Mowlem in 1868. Air and Airs Mowlem resided in Melbourne till 1880, when they left for New Zealand, arriving in Wellington on January 4, 1881, by the To Allan. They then left for Foxton by the Jane Douglas, proceeding to Palmerston North, and purchasing a farm at Longburn. where they lived for three years, before taking over a 300acre farm at No. 4 Line, Fitzherbert. While they were living at Longburn the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Co. was formed and a piece of Air Mowlem’s farm was purchased by the company and the line now runs through the property. Because of her long residence in the district Airs Alowlem could relate many experiences of the hardships, earthquakes and other troubles which took place in the early days, one being the earthquakes in June, 1881, when there were 39 tremors in 24 hours. After being at Fitzherbert for seven years, Air and Airs Alowlem retired from farm life, returning to Palmerston North, where Air Alowlem set up as a commission agent. Airs Alowlem had lived in Church Street for the last 48 years, until the time of her death. Her husband predeceased her nine years ago. and she is survived by one sister, Aliss A. AIould ; of Alclbourne, and her three children, Air H. Alowlem (Auckland), Airs E. Poole (Palmerston North), and Airs A. Bropliy (Plimmerton). There are eight grandchildren and eleven greatgrandchildren. AIISS E. J. CUMING. The funeral of Aliss Elizabeth Joy Cuming, whose death at the early age of 20 years came as a painful shock to her many friends, took place in Marten on Thursday afternoon. A lengthy cortege followed the remains to the Alount View Cemetery. Rev. E. Chambers. of the Trinity Church, AVanganui, and Rev. F. Alartin. also of Wanganui, officiated at the service hold in the Alarton Alethodist Church, while Air Chambers and Mr Alartin, assisted by Rev. T. H. Burton, eonducted the service at the graveside. Miss Cuming wa6 a daughter of Rev. AV. B.' Cuming, formerly of Woodville and Alarton, and a sister of Airs G. Greathead, of Fcilding.
